Ghana. The Gold Coast

The Volta River, 1600 km long, is navigable for a hundred kilometres from its mouth towards the inland.
Cocoa is one of the major resources of Ghana. For several years, the country was among the world’s biggest cocoa producers.
Akosombo Dam’ s electric output serves 90% of national demand.
Fishery along the coasts and inland waters (lakes and rivers) plays a relevant economic role.
Gold diggers. Ghana is rich in natural resources, including gold, of which the country was Africa’s second-largest producer.
The Elmina Castle was built by the Portuguese in 1482. It is the oldest European building in existence below the Sahara.
Market. Women are the real protagonists of the market. Everything passes through their hands.
Dixove, a coastal village with a buzzing port and the site of Fort Metal Cross, an English-built fort completed in 1698.
Two little girls at school. Compulsory education starts in kindergarten, continues through elementary school, and ends in lower secondary school.
