Ghana. The Gold Coast

The Volta River, 1600 km long, is navigable for a hundred kilometres from its mouth towards the inland.
Cocoa is one of the major resources of Ghana. For several years, the country was among the world’s biggest cocoa producers.
Akosombo Dam’ s electric output serves 90% of national demand.
Fishery along the coasts and inland waters (lakes and rivers) plays a relevant economic role.
Gold diggers. Ghana is rich in natural resources, including gold, of which the country was Africa’s second-largest producer.
The Elmina Castle was built by the Portuguese in 1482. It is the oldest European building in existence below the Sahara.
Market. Women are the real protagonists of the market. Everything passes through their hands.
Dixove, a coastal village with a buzzing port and the site of Fort Metal Cross, an English-built fort completed in 1698.

Nicaragua. El Güegüense. The resistance of a People

On 19 January, people come from all over the country to celebrate the patron saint of the town of Diriamba, Saint Sebastian.
A group of people wearing the typical mask of the Diriamba culture, the Güegüense, accompany San Sebastián.
Unlike the carnival in other cities, which lasts only one day, the festival of Diriamba lasts a whole week.
The different characters are distinguished by their costumes, wooden masks, hairstyles and other accessories.
The costumes and decorations are also an essential part of the dance performances.
Children take part in the procession in the streets of Diriamba.
The Gueguense Mask.
A traditional dance El Viejo y La Vieja (The Old Man and the Old Lady).  This dance is slow but elegant and all the movements are done with a stick.
In 2005, UNESCO declared Gueguense a World Heritage.
